Diving Into a New Season
The swim team’s old caps and goggles are being dusted off as both Stoughton swim teams start their new seasons.
Girls Swim started their 2021-2022 season off in August, and the team members are eager to dive back into the pool.
Team captain, senior Cora Borroughs, is excited to get back into the pool and be surrounded by her teammates again.
“The team this year is really fun and full of energy,” Borroughs says.
Borroughs remarks that while this season has been positive so far, there are some younger athletes that are still learning to adjust to a new swimming environment.
“The season so far is going well. I think that many people have already improved since the start of the season,” Borroughs says. “This season is really different from past years because we have many new swimmers who are not used to the swimming environment and dealing with COVID.”
Now that fall sports are able to kick off this season, thoughts turn to the safety precautions the school has in place.
“We wear masks on the way to the pool and take them off when we get in, but when we get out we have to put them back on again,” Borroughs says.
Swimming is one of the sports where athletes have the luxury to be distanced just by the nature of the activity. With masks in place and the distance between the swimmers, the proper safety precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of everyone in and out of the pool.
COVID-19 precautions are not the only thing that has changed on the swim team. The girls swim team is currently working on rebuilding their numbers due to a large amount of seniors graduating last year.
Team captain, senior Melanie Regan, expresses some of the team’s goals for the year.
“I think our main goals are just getting more people to join and encouraging the newer people to keep swimming next year,” Regan says.
Gaining new team members is not the only thing on the team’s mind. Personally improving is also high on the list.
Regan says, “We don’t have a lot of more experienced swimmers, so we’re not doing so great record wise, […] but everyone personally is doing really well.”
Despite any of the challenges the team might face this year, they are all very excited to compete again.
Both team captains share their advice for all budding athletes out there.
“My advice would be to have fun and take advantage of your time in high school sports because time goes by really fast,” Borroughs says.
Regan adds, “Keep your mentality up and just keep trying your very hardest and you’ll see your results.”
