On the afternoon of Sunday, April 14, three Norse Starians made their way around Stoughton with a mission: determining the best sandwich place in town. Since February 2024, Stoughton has had four sandwich shops: Cousins Subs, Milio’s, Jimmy John’s, and Subway. Norse Star staff members Ainsley Gerard, Madison Kenrick, and Libby Phillips decided to try and compare all four.
After the sandwiches were collected, they were cut up and distributed amongst the group so every member could properly judge each restaurant. The Norse Starians decided to sit outside to enjoy the weather and their meals.
Subway:
When Gerard, Kenrick, and Phillips arrived at their first stop, Subway, they were greeted by a long line of people waiting to order. This worked well, giving them time to agree on what to try. After waiting around five minutes, they arrived at the counter. The three got a six-inch sandwich on white bread with turkey, lettuce, and mayo. The sandwich cost $5.
As they dug into their Subway sandwich, they had mixed opinions.
“The bread was really crunchy,” Kenrick said. “I feel like it’s normally softer.”
Phillips enjoyed the sandwich, but she had one complaint, saying, “It needed a better mayo distribution, my first bite was all mayo.”
Cousins:
Cousins Subs was the trio’s second stop of the day. At Cousins, they were overwhelmed by the menu. The Cousins menu offers various options, from a typical sandwich to mac and cheese. Although the trio was overwhelmed by the possibilities, they decided on a “sub in a bowl,” or a salad with deli turkey, which cost $9. After they ordered, they sat down and waited for their order to be ready. The three waited about ten minutes when they were told that Cousins had run out of spring mix. After waiting another five minutes, they received their “sub in a bowl.” Expecting it to be with lettuce, they were surprised to see that they had gotten spring mix even after being told they were out.
Their meal from Cousins was their least favorite of the day.
“It has a weird taste to it; I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s not good,” Kenrick said. They also did not appreciate the turkey in the “sub in a bowl.”
“The turkey was oddly thin, something about it didn’t seem right to me,” Gerard said.
“It was weird,” Phillips agreed.
Milio’s:
The third stop for the trio was Milio’s. Located next to a smoke shop, this is Milio’s second location in Stoughton. The first location, which now serves as the new site of Pizza Hut, closed a few years ago. The sub-chain returned to Stoughton in October of 2022. The three got a meatball sub to share at Milio’s, which cost $8. Milio’s was by far the quickest restaurant of the four. The Norse Star members waited less than three minutes to be told their order was ready.
The meatball sub was the second favorite of the day.
“I was surprised at how good the meatballs were,” Kenrick said. “I wouldn’t expect for a sandwich shop to have good meatballs.”
“The sandwich was good. It was not the best thing I’ve ever had, but it was still good,” Gerard said. “The only thing I wish was different was the bread. It was a little soggy, but there is not much they can do about that.”
Jimmy John’s: Jimmy John’s sandwiches were the three’s last stop of the day. The three got their own sandwiches at Jimmy John’s as they couldn’t agree on one to share due to the extensive menu. Gerard got a number four, or a “turkey tom,” with no tomato, Kenrick got a slim four with no cheese, and Phillips got a number 10, or a “hunter’s club” with no tomato and no cheese. The three all spent about $9 each on their sandwiches.
The Jimmy John’s workers could get all three orders done in around five minutes between in-store customers and deliveries.
Even though they all got different sandwiches, Jimmy John’s was the agreed-upon favorite.
“Jimmy John’s just hits every time,” Kenrick said. “Nothing about my sandwich was wrong. I’ve had better from there but it was still very good.”
