Politics isn’t new to me, and I’m sure my support for Kamala Harris probably comes as no surprise to anyone who knows me. In fact, I’ve been contacting my closest friends and family about voting in every election for the past four years, whether it be for the school board, mayor, Congress, or, in this case, the presidency. But I promise you, this election is not like any before.
For the past four years –in addition to badgering everyone I know about voting– I have had many eye-opening opportunities in the world of politics and public service. I was elected as the student representative to SASD’s Board of Education, appointed as a youth member to the Dane County Board of Supervisors, and chosen by U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin to serve as a U.S. Senate Page in Washington DC for a semester to work at our nation’s capital. Along the way, I learned a lot and was excited about working to improve our state and nation, but no day has felt as promising as today.
I have never been as hopeful for the future of our nation as I am today. I have never been as determined to fight for our country as I am today. And I have never been as excited to elect Kamala Harris as our nation’s next president as I am today.
And when we elect Harris this November, we won’t just be turning a new page for America, we will write a new chapter for the history books. A chapter of American history where everyone can achieve the American dream, where all voices are valued, and a chapter of American history we can be proud to call our own.
When we come together and elect Harris, she will fight for working Americans on Day One. She will hold big businesses accountable and make them pay their fair share while giving well-deserved tax cuts and incentives to working families and small businesses.
For the past four years, the Biden-Harris administration has fought to lower costs and invest in an economy we can sustain for the next generation. Harris cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of the Inflation Reduction Act, which has been the largest investment in clean energy jobs ever. Instead of giving tax breaks to the ultrawealthy, she cast the tiebreaking vote to pass the American Rescue Plan, which provided much-needed economic assistance to families while our nation faced a once-in-a-generation pandemic. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, Harris stepped up and delivered for the American people.
When the Supreme Court threw out 50 years of precedent by overturning Roe v Wade and stripping 1-in-2 Americans of their fundamental constitutional rights, Harris led the fight to protect women’s reproductive health care. Harris led a nationwide advocacy tour with local and state leaders calling on governments to enact laws to protect reproductive health care.
Kamala Harris fights for Americans no matter what role she holds; that’s why over 200 Republican politicians have endorsed her candidacy for president. Lifelong Republicans, including former Vice President Dick Cheney, are backing Harris. Instead of staying beholden to their party, these leaders are standing up and supporting Harris because they believe our nation’s democracy is more important than any one former president’s ambitions.
This November, America faces a question: will we move our nation forward, or go back to hate and division? Will we fund our schools and fairly pay our teachers, or will we eliminate the Department of Education? Will we create an economy where all families can get ahead, or will we continue to enable a broken system?
The time to act is now, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Talk with your friends and family, volunteer, and show up on election day! I choose a new way forward, a nation that includes all Americans.
Kamala Harris has spent her life fighting for the people, and now we must fight for our future.
