CHROMAKOPIA:
My top 3 songs: “Sticky” (feat. GloRilla, Sexxy Red & Lil Wayne), “Judge Judy” and “Tomorrow”
Most streamed song: “St Chroma” (feat. Daniel Caesar) Runner up: “Noid”
Meaning behind the album: Tyler, the Creator, talked about the meaning behind this album at his listening event for CHROMAKOPIA. He talks about how the album was meant to be about his life, before the age of 17 but later switched it around to be more about things his mother taught him in life. He explained to people that many of the songs on this album explain things his mom told/taught him growing up and more about his life that people don’t know about.
My thoughts: CHROMAKOPIA is one of my favorite albums this year. I enjoy the variety of styles he includes for example “I Hope You Find Your Way Home” and “Judge Judy”. “Judge Judy” has a slower tempo and is one of the more chill songs compared to “I Hope You Find Your Way Home”, which has a faster pace and includes him rapping. Another thing I enjoy about Tyler’s music is the different layering he does with backing vocals that make his music feel more lively and full. They add an angelic sound to his music.
SHORT AND SWEET
My top 3 songs: “Juno”, “Good Graces” and “Slim Pickins”
Most streamed song: “Espresso”
Runner up: “Please Please Please”
Meaning behind the album: During Carpenter’s interview with Apple Music, she said, “I thought about some of these relationships and how some of them were the shortest I’ve ever had, and that affected me the most.” Short n’ Sweet gives the idea of finding the right guy and making sure he isn’t a mess up and will treat her poorly. In songs like “Please Please Please” she is begging not to be embarrassed by her partner. “Good Graces” gives the same story. “Slim Pickens” talks about how finding a guy who will treat you right is hard.
My thoughts: I like this album a lot, but I will say I don’t like it as much as others that I’ve listened to. The songs are catchy, and the lyrics are clever and well thought out, but some have been overplayed and become boring. A few being “Please Please Please”, “Espresso” and “Taste”. A few of the songs on the album became overplayed and became more popular than others, with dances and new trends being made. These songs have become uninteresting because of how often they’ve been heard. Other than those few songs though I think the lyrics are thought out very well and I like the amount of humor and style she includes in her songs.
