During winter, the cold weather can deter many people from going outside. While that can cause many people not to experience the joy of outdoor activities, many fun activities can be done indoors. One of those fun activities, and a staple in many people’s childhood, is doing arts and crafts. As such, here are the materials and tutorials on how to do a couple of winter-themed crafts.
Faux-Stained Glass*
- A photo frame with glass on the inside
- Window markers
- White liquid glue (ideally ¾ full)
- Black acrylic paint
- Add some of the black paint to the glue bottle. Try some of the glue on an extra slip of paper to make sure the glue is black. If it’s grey, add more paint. The black glue will act as the lead lines.
- Remove the glass from the photo frame, then start outlining your design with black glue on the glass.
- If you’re bad at freestyling, you can make your design on a piece of paper and put it under the glass. Finding and printing a design online also works!
- Once fully dry, use the window markers to color.
Tealight Lantern*
- Black construction paper
- Any color can be used. Black usually works best because of the contrast it has with the light.
- A battery tea light.
- The size will depend on the jar and how much of the candle you want to be seen.
- Glitter glue
- Snow confetti/glitter
- Small white pom poms/cotton balls
- Liquid glue or hot glue
- Scissors
- Clear glass jar
- Using the construction paper, cut out the design you’d like to use for the tealight lantern.
- One end of the paper will be glued onto the outside of the jar. As you trim the excess, leave enough of the paper to make a tab. This tab will help you make sure your design won’t be glued crookedly.
- Glue the tab to the previously glued-on section of the silhouette. Add a couple of dots of glue onto any parts of the silhouette that may drop.
- (Optional): If you want the ability to change out scenes, loosely glue the two sides of the silhouette together. This will allow the designs to be easily switched from one to the other.
- Add some snow confetti/glitter, the tea light, and then the pom-poms inside the jar– adjust as you deem fit.
The winter season is known as the time to give to others and celebrate the close bonds with the people important to you. While everybody’s traditions on how they celebrate those two aspects differ, there can be joy in how everyone can express them. One person may like to do caroling, another might be helping out their family business during winter break, or someone could be making crafts to give to their loved ones.
