On a cold Saturday evening, Norse Starians Lisa Wang and Naomi Matthiesen arrived at The Feiring for a delicious dinner. Located just beyond the fire station on Main Street, its exterior appearance and initial lack of parking might dissuade some visitors from engaging with such a gem. However, the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” couldn’t be more fitting. The fire station’s parking is a convenient option to park your car, and upon entering, the restaurant’s ambiance more than makes up for its outward exterior.
The lighting was appropriately dimmed, and the tables were evenly spaced to allow for perfect conversation privacy. Each table was adorned with candles and pretty flowers in glass vases. Upon being seated, guests receive two paper menus with the date and food options that in some way add to the overall vibe of the restaurant. When it comes to the atmosphere of The Feiring, there’s not a thing lacking.
The menu featured more options for drinks than food, leaving the two underage Norse Starians in attendance with fewer options to choose from. However, while the food and drink options may have been limited, Wang and Matthiesen each found a dish suited to their tastes. Wang ordered the chicken breast, served with marsala mushroom sauce, green beans, and mashed potatoes.
“It was actually pretty good. I thought I’d be sick of [mashed potatoes] after getting my wisdom teeth removed, but this was good. The chicken was a little dry, but I think the sauce, mushrooms, and potatoes that came with it complimented the chicken, and I could ignore the dryness,” said Wang.
Matthiesen ordered the short rib, served over mashed potatoes with roasted carrots and red wine pan sauce.
“My dish was really good. I don’t really like roasted carrots usually, but I ate everything on my plate, which is definitely a sign that it was good. The short rib was, I’m being honest, perfect. And I don’t really have high standards for mashed potatoes to begin with, but they were better than I was expecting. I would definitely get the short rib again,” Matthiesen said.
After finishing their meals, Matthiesen ordered the flourless chocolate cake, served with raspberries and cream.
“It was super good. It reminded me of fudge, and even though there wasn’t frosting or anything, it was delicious, especially with the cream,” said Matthiesen.
Additionally, the waitstaff served Matthiesen and Wang complimentary chocolate-covered strawberries at the end of the meal as a gesture due to the wait time for the food. However, neither Wang nor Matthiesen had noticed it taking a long delay at all.
At the end of the meal, the Norse Starians were handed the bill. Matthiesen’s total was $33, before tip, and Wang’s was $21, also before tip.
“It was good, but I would have been fine paying less for what I got,” Wang said. “It was so expensive, at least for a part-time worker like me. But, I get it, with the economy and everything.”
Overall, Wang and Matthiesen rated the restaurant a 4.5 out of 5 stars for their experience and meal. A must-dine-in restaurant for any food connoisseurs!
