On a gloomy, rainy Friday morning, Norse Starian Ainsley Gerard waited in the Stoughton High School lunch line. Just two months ago was the first time SHS students were able to walk into the new lunch serving area and eat in the new Commons.
Patiently awaiting, Gerard stood in the Creation Station line for about five minutes before reaching the front of the line. She was served an Asian rice bowl topped with chicken and a sauce. The bowl was also served with cooked mixed vegetables, an egg roll, and a fortune cookie.
This was just one of the many options available to SHS students that day. They could also choose the Chef’s House Classics, which featured a bean & cheese quesadilla with rice and Firenze corn salsa; The Good Eats Diner, offering hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken patties, or French bread pizza; Upper Crust Pizza with cheese, pepperoni, sausage, meat lover, or chicken bacon ranch, and lastly, the Grab & Go which served a buffalo chicken wrap or a chicken Caesar salad.
Once Gerard got her food and thanked the lunch ladies, she walked to her table and sat down. The atmosphere was nice, but a little chilly. Gerard said whenever she eats in the Commons, she always has to wear her jacket. Now, she was ready to try the meal. The first thing she tried was the rice with the sauce.
“The rice was good. I mean, it’s pretty hard to mess up rice,” Gerard said, “The sauce, however, is delicious. It tastes fresh and homemade.” she continued.
Next, Gerard tried the chicken that was served with the bowl.
“The chicken nuggets were okay. I would have preferred popcorn chicken over nuggets, but no major complaints.” she said
Gerard skipped out on the mixed vegetables and the egg roll because she does not like them. Along with her meal, she also tried the churros and M&M cookies available through A La Carte.
A La Carte is another lunch option for SHS students to choose from. It features items like cookies, pretzels, chips, a variety of prepared fruits, and an array of drink options.
“The churros were delicious as always,” Gerard said. “And the cookies were just as I remembered them.” she continued.
Gerard enjoyed the rest of her meal with her friend and left fully satisfied, with no major complaints.
“I really enjoyed this meal. I think our lunch food breaks the stereotype that all lunch food is bad,” Gerard said. “There are definitely things that they can improve on, but overall, it was a very good meal and left me full for the rest of the school day.” She stated.
Other Norse Starians Marah Kostlevy and Miles Heritsch also shared their thoughts on the food.
“I really love the curry they serve and I think it is better than any other school. ” Kostlevy said.
Heritsch appreciates the variety of alternative options the lunch line offers.
“I like that they are serving more options for vegetarians,” Heritsch said. “They now serve tofu as a meat replacement option,” they said.
Overall, Gerard rated the school lunch 4 out of 5 stars. She recommends that every SHS student try the school lunch.
