So, I had zero expectations going into this movie. Unlike many people, I hadn’t seen any trailers, but I thought I’d enjoy it from all the people I’ve seen joking about it on TikTok. And I did! The whole thing was great with its over-the-top acting, silly song breaks, and pop culture references.
Leading up to when I watched it, I saw many clips of what happened inside theaters during the movie, including everyone in the theater saying (screaming) lines from the trailers, people throwing popcorn and candy at the screen, setting off fireworks and confetti cannons, and someone bringing a live chicken into the movie theater. Fortunately or unfortunately for me, I didn’t get to experience any of this because I ended up having to PIRATEs of the Caribbean it, at the cost of its quality and the sheer community the movie brought together.
The game is almost as old as I am. Millions of people grew up playing Minecraft, and even more watched YouTubers play it. DanTDM, Aphmau, and LDshadowlady were just a few of these people playing Minecraft in the early days, and they had a cameo at the beginning of the movie! That was so fun to see because I was a fan of Lizzy (LDshadowlady) growing up, and it’s incredible to see how far she’s come.
My favorite part of the entire movie was the very blatant Technoblade reference. Technoblade was a very popular Minecraft YouTuber during 2019/2020. He unfortunately passed away from cancer in 2022. The reference hit very close to home because I was a fan of his before he died.
I love all the little bits and pieces of actual Minecraft and the experience of playing it in the movie (e.i, Steve’s Creeper farm, sound effects). It was great to see the thought behind the film as well as the funny parts.
I may be in the minority with this one, but I genuinely loved all of the little jingles Steve sang throughout the movie. “Steve’s Lava Chicken” is now a staple in my playlist.
It is a movie that’s so bad that it’s good. Everything about it screams that I would hate it, but I loved it. It’s a solid 6/10 for me. Also, by the end of the movie, I ended up shipping Garrett and Steve much more than I thought I would (THE “MAN SANDWICH” SCENE ANYONE?). Why does their bromance hit so hard? I’ll never know.
