A Taste of Stoughton
Page 1:
A typical morning in downtown Stoughton would mean the aroma of coffee and freshly prepared food wafting through Main Street as customers enter the restaurants. Although Stoughton is famous for its Norwegian culture, the town’s food options reflect both its history and its growing cultural diversity.
From traditional Norwegian eateries to Indian, Chinese, Mediterranean, and Mexican restaurants, these establishments define how people in the town come together.

Stoughton’s Norwegian heritage dates back to the late 1800s, when immigrants arrived in the region and brought traditions that endure to this day. The community celebrates its heritage through events such as Syttende Mai and family-owned bakeries and restaurants that serve dishes passed down through the years. For some members of the community,
Norwegian cuisine is more than just a meal – it is a symbol of continuity and pride in heritage. This tradition continues to be a part of Stoughton’s identity, even as other cultures and cuisines are added to its heritage.
At The Feiring, owner Ryan Milton combines his personal experience, fresh ingredients and long-term vision to create a restaurant that continues to evolve and grow with the community.
While the restaurant has a Norwegian name, the menu is not necessarily based on traditional Norwegian dishes. Instead, Milton combines his own experience growing up in California with his experience working in various restaurants, where he learned a variety of cooking techniques.
“I like cooking. I grew up in California and I cooked a lot of California cuisine. My mother was also a teacher and I worked in many different restaurants and learned many techniques,” Milton said.
However, he hopes to incorporate some Norwegian elements into the menu in the future, reflecting Stoughton’s heritage.
Milton said that Wisconsin’s focus on fresh, quality ingredients has influenced his own cooking. In creating the menu, he said that it is an ongoing process as he tries to meet the needs of a variety of customers while still maintaining balance.
“Balancing the menu is a never-ending process,” Milton said. “I try to have something for vegetarians and people with gluten intolerance. Even though we are not a vegan restaurant, we have made some food choices vegan.”
Some of the most well-received dishes include the grilled salmon and the short rib, which have contributed to the restaurant’s loyal customer base. Milton reported that the community’s reaction to the restaurant has been very positive.
“The reviews in town have been very positive. We have regulars. I have many people who come out of town, but Stoughton has received me very well,” Milton said.
In addition to the restaurant’s success, Milton reported that one of his most significant achievements has been to create a loyal and dedicated staff.
“One of my accomplishments is having created a wonderful staff. They range from adults to teenagers and I support and love them,” Milton said.
In the future, Milton hopes to expand the restaurant’s hours, including more brunch hours and lunch hours on Sundays. However, Milton made it clear that he wants to do this at a responsible rate.
“It is important to me to do that slowly because I do not want to overwork my staff, especially since the restaurant industry is tough,” Milton said.
Milton said that the most formidable challenge he faced was opening the restaurant, but he is determined to make it a place where his customers feel welcome and appreciated.
“We all work hard for our money,” Milton said. “When people choose to spend it here – and when they feel the servers are kind and the restaurant is clean – that means everything to me.”

In the end, Gerard rated her donut a 4.5 out of 5, “I wasn’t a fan of the strawberry jam/jelly in the middle because I’m not a fan of fruit jellies in donuts,” she said. “however, I do think it added a nice touch and more flavor to the donut instead of just chocolate.” she continued.
Fellow Norse Starian Andrea Becerra La Madrid tried the classic glazed donut, noting her preference for the classics.
“It’s a pretty basic [choice], but you can never go wrong,” Becerra said. “I also love to get the filled ones which are injected with jelly,” she continued.

“[The glazed donut] is my fav. 5 out of 5,” Becerra shared. “I believe that Fosdal’s is the best donut in Stoughton.” She continued.
Another Norse Starian, Lilly Adams, tried the fan-favorite chocolate donut. Adams praised the donut’s simplicity and sweetness.
“It wasn’t overly rich, just sweet enough to be able to enjoy in one sitting,” Adams said. “The [donut] itself was a little dry; however, the frosting made up for it,” she said.
Overall, Adams enjoyed the donut-tasting experience, noting it was precisely what she wanted.
“[It was a good donut], brought a nostalgic taste that is always welcome,” she said. Adams rated the chocolate sprinkle donut 4.5 out of 5.

Page 4: La Cantina y El Río Grande
Mexican food is a popular choice for many people in Stoughton. When someone is hungry for tacos, enchiladas, or a plate of sizzling fajitas, two local restaurants often come up in conversation: El Rio Grande and La Cantina. The two places are only a few blocks apart, but each has its own style and atmosphere. Because they are so close to downtown, many residents find it easy to visit either one for lunch or dinner during the week.
El Rio Grande is on West Main Street and has been part of the community for more than 10 years. Over time, it has become a familiar spot for people who enjoy Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes. The menu includes many well-known favorites. Customers can order burritos filled with seasoned meat and topped with sauce, tacos with a variety of fillings, cheesy enchiladas, and hot fajitas served on a skillet. Most meals come with rice and beans, giving diners a full and satisfying plate.
Guests at El Rio Grande can choose chicken, steak, or shrimp for many of the dishes. This variety makes it easy for people to pick something that fits their taste. Portions are generous, and the flavors are familiar and comforting. Many families return again and again because they know what to expect from the menu.
There is also a full bar at El Rio Grande. Customers can order margaritas and other drinks to enjoy with their meals. In the evenings, the bar area can become lively, especially on weekends. Friends sometimes gather there to relax after work or to celebrate special occasions. The dining room itself is simple and comfortable, with booths and tables that work well for families, couples, and small groups. Parking can be tight when the restaurant gets busy, but many people still choose to go because it is within walking distance of downtown shops and businesses. The restaurant is usually open Tuesday through Sunday, giving residents plenty of chances to stop by.
La Cantina is located on Nygaard Street, just a short walk from El Rio Grande. Like its neighbor, it serves everyday Mexican dishes such as burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas. The menu also includes a kids’ menu and some vegetarian choices. This makes it easy for families or groups with different preferences to find something they will enjoy. Parents appreciate having simple options for children, while others in the group can try meatless meals or traditional favorites.
One feature that stands out at La Cantina is the outdoor seating. When the weather is warm, customers can sit on the patio and eat outside. The patio offers a relaxed setting where people can enjoy the fresh air while dining. It is especially popular during spring and summer evenings. Inside, the space is bright and welcoming. The dining area feels open and calm, which many guests find appealing during quieter times of the day.
La Cantina also offers takeout for those who prefer to eat at home. Customers can call ahead or place an order and pick it up to bring back to their families. This option is helpful on busy weeknights when cooking is not convenient. The staff works to make both dine-in and takeout experiences smooth and simple.
Both restaurants are casual and family-friendly. They serve similar types of food, but the overall experience feels slightly different at each one. El Rio Grande often has a busier bar scene in the evenings, while La Cantina tends to feel more relaxed, especially during the daytime hours. Together, these two nearby restaurants give people in Stoughton convenient and dependable choices for Mexican food. Whether someone wants to meet friends for dinner, enjoy a drink after work, or pick up a quick meal for the family, both places offer familiar flavors close to home.
